GUIDELINE TO:
HOW TO IMPLEMENT CONTAINMENT UPGRADES (IBCs AND IN-LINE PROCESSING) TO A PHARMACEUTICAL R&D SOLIDS DEVELOPMENT SUITE

APRIL 29, 2009 WEBINAR
10:00 - 11:30 am EDT

Recent years of increased capacity demands and increased potency of pharmaceutical compounds being handled has lead the site to consider upgrades to its solids development suite processing area.

Previous development suite processing was performed with basic containment options such as local exhaust ventilation and a reliance on respiratory protection to ensure adequate employee protection.

The challenge of following the hierarchy of control principles and the increasing potency of pharmaceuticals being handled led to the development of a large retrofit project.

Previous open handling activities were eliminated and replaced with robust systems that utilized intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) and a move toward in-line processing.  Equipment was either purchased to provide for contained processing or existing equipment was modified to use alpha/beta ports with IBC connections.  Occupational Hygiene results demonstrated marked improvements in containment performance as a result of this project and subsequently less reliance on respirator use

    In this webinar you will:

    • Learn the hierarchy of control philosophy
    • Review the plans for this particular upgrade project
    • Examine results from Industrial Hygiene sampling
    • Review “flexible isolator” technology
    • Examine the decision process to pursue either flexible or rigid technology
    • See specifications for the new development suite
    • Review hygiene study parameters
    • Examine valve technology, hoists, trolley, fume hoods
    • Identify advantages and disadvantages of in line processing
